How to Test a Proxy: IP, Country and Speed

Before a proxy goes into a tool, test it on its own. One command tells you whether the login works, which country you appear in, and how fast it is.

Is it working?

Ask a service that replies with the address it sees. If the answer is not your own IP address, the proxy is in use.

Shell

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@resi.piratproxies.com:8080 https://api.ipify.org

Is it in the right country?

Ask for the country as well:

Shell

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@resi.piratproxies.com:8080 https://ipinfo.io/json

The country comes from the code in your username. If it is wrong, the code is missing or mistyped. Different lookup services sometimes disagree about the city of an address; the country is what to rely on.

How fast is it?

curl can print the time a request took:

Shell

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@resi.piratproxies.com:8080 -o /dev/null -s -w "%{time_total} seconds\n" https://example.com

A residential or mobile connection passes through somebody's real line, so expect it to be slower than your own, and to vary from one address to the next. Try a few before judging.

Reading the errors

What you seeWhat it means
407The proxy refused the login. Check the username and password.
Connection refused or timed outWrong host or port, or something on your network blocks it.
403 from the websiteThe proxy worked. The website refused the request.
Your own IP address in the answerThe proxy was not used at all. The tool ignored the setting.

Without a command line

Every plan page on PiratProxies has a test button that checks the proxy from our side, and the dashboard shows the usage, so you can see that traffic is passing.

Questions

Why do two IP-check sites show different cities?

They use different databases, and those databases guess. The network and country are reliable; the city often is not.
